The idea of ditching your DSLR or mirrorless camera in favor of your smartphone is a dream come true for many. Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has taken things further with the 12S Ultra Concept, which integrates detachable lenses with the company’s most impressive smartphone to date.
Xiaomi announced this concept phone on Chinese networking site Weibo, where regional PR teams Headset (with lens attached) on various social media channels including Twitter.
Effectively modified version of Xiaomi 12S Ultra, with 1 inch rear camera sensor, this concept has an updated circular rear camera ring that supports connecting Leica M-series lenses. The M-series lens kit is designed for crop sensors, making it a perfect fit.
Leica worked with Xiaomi to design and produce this concept device that has two 1-inch camera sensors as well as a layer of sapphire glass to protect the camera module. This has been added to protect the lenses on the plate from scratches and marks that can come from screw movement when installing compatible Leica M-series lenses. It’s not entirely clear what camera sensor is being used, but we think the Sony IMX989 1-inch sensor is being used again.
What you can see from the video is that a speed booster or lens extension tube is used so that the Leica lenses can be attached to the rear camera module of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept. If a speed booster is needed, this indicates that this is not just a switch like similar, as additional optics are required to focus the incoming light onto the smaller sensor.
This also could open the door for further adaptation to the lens if Xiaomi makes the device public; What’s interesting is that the Summicron-M 35mm lens shown during this ad often retails for $3000.
This isn’t the first smartphone to promote interchangeable lenses. Motorola offered additional Hasselblad-certified “True Zoom” covers for its Moto Z range, and Panasonic also introduced the CM1, which uses a 1-inch camera sensor and an integrated Leica lens.
For many, this is very similar to the natural progression of smartphones with increasing sensor sizes and reaching the limits of modern smartphone photography. A short video announcing the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept phone shows that many common camera features are included in peak focus, histogram, and even 10-bit RAW photo shooting.
As is often the case with such concept devices, we are unlikely to see this smartphone come to market. However, given the increasing partnerships between Android OEMs and camera companies, this could be an increasing area for development in the coming years. We’d love to get our hands on the device to put it through its paces and see how it stacks up against the best smartphone cameras currently available, but it’s highly unlikely that this device will make it to retail channels in and outside of China.
our area Dylan Russell He coined the term “pomera”, which is a very suitable mount for this great looking phone camera. Tell us what you’ll call the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept in the comments section below.
