LG is creating a stretchable screen while the Twitter chaos continues


It’s finally the weekend, which means it’s time once again to name the winner and loser of this week in tech.

This week saw the release of the much-anticipated God of War (2018), God of War Ragnarök, some very early Pixel 8 leaks and the first batch of Black Friday deals arriving before the mega sale later this month.

LG stretchable screen

Winner: LG

The winner this week is LG after the company unveiled a potentially game-changing new display technology.

The technology, which LG has dubbed the “stretchable” screen, is clearly the world’s first 12-inch HD display to achieve 20% flexibility. This basically means that the screen can be extended, folded and rolled up without suffering any damage or distortion.

The screen, which is based on the same silicone substrate used in contact lenses, uses a small LED light source. The screen has a resolution of 100 ppi and supports RGB in full color, which allows it to compete with many of the current monitors, according to the brand.

It also seems very durable. The flexible S-shaped spring wire construction allows the monitor to expand from 12″ to 14″ while withstanding “large external impacts”.

While we’re likely far from seeing this technology in use in the real world, LG is already envisioning a wide range of scenarios for the stretchable screen. For example, it can be attached to curved surfaces, such as clothing, furniture, cars, airplanes, and even leather.

With foldable screens making their way to more and more smartphones and foldable screens on the horizon, it seems only a matter of time before the foldable device makes its debut.

Blue Twitter

Loser: Twitter

Twitter has remained mostly static over the past decade, with its biggest scandals being the large number of bots sweeping the site and whatever Donald Trump was doing before his account was suspended in 2021.

However, that all changed this week when new owner Elon Musk launched his remake of the site’s Twitter Blue subscription service.

For the low price of $7.99 / £6.99 a month, you can also now also see fewer ads, post longer videos, prioritize your tweets on the platform, and see your account verified with the same blue tick previously reserved for the likes of Joe Biden, BB C, Beyoncé and Musk himself.

Of these features, the blue tick has caused by far the biggest uproar on the site, with many users pointing out the obvious consequences of allowing people to verify their own accounts. Starbucks frappuccino price.

We’ve seen verified accounts posting tweets attributed to the likes of Nintendo of America, LeBron James and Jesus Christ himself, and we don’t even mention accounts pretending to be companies and celebrities to spread scam links, putting your personal data at risk.

Other sites have poked fun at the situation, with Tumblr currently selling a bundle of two sets of “Important Internet Blue Checkmarks” for $7.99 with apparently no limit on how many you can buy.

As of writing this column on Friday, we’ve noticed that the button inviting you to join Twitter Blue has mysteriously disappeared in some of our accounts, with the app now claiming that a subscription will be available on our site soon (this wasn’t the case on Thursday).

What all this means for Twitter Blue remains to be seen, but in the meantime, you can get a small glimpse into the chaos that has followed the site this week in this week’s post. route.
