We expect the Samsung Galaxy S23 phones to bring with them a host of upgrades, from cameras to processors, but there seems to be one key specification that won’t see any improvement: the fingerprint sensor.

There’s nothing particularly wrong with the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S22, but just like Notebookcheck (Opens in a new tab) He points out that it was hoped that the sensor on the Galaxy S23 would be bigger and better. Now it seems unlikely that this will be the case.
Same old same old
Specifically, the Galaxy S22 is equipped with a capable Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 sensor, while the Galaxy S23 was thought to carry Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max – a more accurate and secure sensor that can scan two fingers simultaneously.
Maybe Samsung decided it wanted to stick with the same fingerprint sensor to keep costs down, or maybe the original rumors of a fingerprint sensor upgrade were far from reality from the start — but that’s one upgrade that now seems unlikely.
You could argue that fingerprint sensors aren’t the most important component of a smartphone, but considering how many times we unlock our phones each day, they can have a huge impact on the user experience.
Analysis: Fingerprint sensor upgrades
Head over to the official Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max website (Opens in a new tab) And you’ll see that there are improvements in a whole host of areas. It’s the largest in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor yet, using sound waves to scan fingerprints at a fast pace and with incredibly high accuracy.
Qualcomm says it is much more difficult to impersonate a fingerprint using this technology than it is with standard fingerprint sensors. It’ll wipe off fingerprints faster when wet, and because of the sonic-prism wiping, it’s more reliable when your fingers aren’t quite clean, either.
The larger surface area allows two fingers to be scanned simultaneously, and the sensor has an error rate of 1 in 250,000, according to the manufacturer. However, based on the leaked protective glass we’ve seen appear online, we’ll have to wait until at least 2024 to see it in Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S phone.
However, it’s not all bad news, as the Galaxy S23 will bring with it many phone improvements that came before it. This week we have already heard that the phone will pack a customized version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that offers better performance.
