TSMC, Apple’s chip supplier, has plans to mass-produce next-generation 3-nanometer chips at its $12 billion Arizona facility, according to the Taiwanese company’s founder.

Speaking to reporters Monday in Taipei, Morris Chang said the 3nm plant will be located at the same site as the 5nm plant in Arizona.

“Three nanometers, TSMC now has a plan, but it has not been fully completed,” said Zhang, who has retired from TSMC but remains influential in the company. Reuters. “It’s almost done — at the same Arizona site, phase two. Five nanometers is phase one, 3nm is phase two.”

It is rumored that Apple is porting its custom silicon to the 3nm process starting with the M2 Pro or M3 chip. Both the Apple ‌M3‌ chip for Mac and the A17 chip for iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be built based on TSMC’s improved 3nm process. bloombergMark Gurman said he expects the M2 Pro to be used in next year’s updates to the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the high-end Mac mini.

Moving to a more advanced process usually improves performance and energy efficiency, enabling faster speeds and longer battery life on future Macs and iPhones. According to TSMC, the 3nm technology, also known as N3, will deliver up to 70% logical density increase, up to 15% speed improvement at the same power, and up to 30% power reduction at the same speed compared to its predecessor. The company says it is targeting production volume in the second half of this year.
