Xiaomi Series 12 launches globally with a starting price of 649 USD, and more

After being first launched in China at the end of 2021, the Xiaomi 12 series has now been officially revealed to the global markets.

Thanks to this early launch, we know almost all of the key specs and design quirks. To update, the Xiaomi 12 series consists of three premium models, 12, 12 x and 12 Pro. The main specs of the 12 and 12 Pro package, with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and 5G.

The undoubted flagship of the new lineup is the Xiaomi 12 Pro, which comes with a 6.7-inch QHD + 120 Hz LTPO AMOLED curved screen. It’s a worthy follow-up to the Mi 11 Ultra from last year with its 50MP triple camera setup. The main sensor is a Sony IMX 707 sensor, while the 2x telephoto and ultrawide lens use Samsung ISOCELL sensors. Selfie camera 32 megapixels.

120W wired fast charging is also included, with the Xiaomi 12 Pro charging an internal 4600mAh battery. 50W Qi wireless charging is also included with 10W reverse wireless charging also available.

While the Xiaomi 12 isn’t the base model, it offers a 6.28-inch FHD display with 120Hz refresh rate, 1,100 nits brightness, Gorilla Glass Victus, and a 4,500mAh capable battery. Wired charging 67W and wireless charging 50W.

The camera has a 50MP primary camera but uses a Sony IMX766 sensor, a 13MP ultrawide camera, and a macro camera. There is also a 32MP selfie camera. Interestingly, Xiaomi doesn’t mention any biometric support in its announcement post, but presumably there is some form of sensor under the screen.

The last smartphone filling in the Xiaomi 12 lineup is the Xiaomi 12x. It differs somewhat from the rest of the series by offering the same chassis and internal base (RAM, storage, camera, battery) as the Xiaomi 12 standard. However, it uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor instead of the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 first-generation chip.

Unlike the Chinese launch, the entire Xiaomi 12 series will ship with MIUI 13 on top of Android 12. In China, the trio was launched with MIUI 12.5 on top of Android 11.

Xiaomi has offered pricing in the US, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to purchase any Series 12 device in North American markets. The Xiaomi 12 Pro 8/256 GB model starts at $999, while the Xiaomi 12 8/128 GB model starts at $749. As you’d expect given the differences, the 8/128GB version of the Xiaomi 12x starts at $649.
