Xiaomi has signed a “long-term strategic partnership” with camera lens and camera manufacturer Leica in a bid to improve and enhance camera performance on upcoming flagship smartphones.
Leica previously partnered with Huawei to help tune and optimize the Mate and P series smartphones. However, with Huawei still facing penalties and difficulties in western markets, Xiaomi has moved on to secure a partnership with Leica on upcoming devices. The German imaging company has also partnered with a number of other brands including Sharp with only the latest Japanese Aquos line.
Announcing a new device coming in July, which is expected to be a follow-up to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. No more details have been shared about the actual device in question, which is likely to be the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. However, the recently introduced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset would be a potential candidate as one of the primary internal components of a device worth checking out on the impressive Mi 11 Ultra.
In a press release confirming this partnership with Leica, Xiaomi stated that the first flagship smartphone camera to benefit from this deal “will be officially launched in July of this year.” It’s also unclear if this partnership will see minor tweaks to Leica’s software and color tuning like the OnePlus-Hasselblad and Oppo-Hasselblad partnership put in place in recent years.
Xiaomi and Leica share the same ideas regarding mobile photography. Both companies are keen to continually explore optical performance and the photographic experience in the age of mobile photography through extreme technological breakthroughs and aesthetic endeavors.
The use of a “strategic partnership in image technology” in the ad post suggests that this could offer either option, which would be a way to help differentiate the growing batch of Android smartphone hardware manufacturers trying to capture the global sales crown that occupies The third place is from a Chinese brand.
