How’s it going guys I’m ThioJoe now many of us use Windows 10 every single day and even if you’re pretty familiar with it You obviously don’t know everything about it for example there’s the menu called turn Windows Features on and off and even if you’ve seen this menu before you might not know what every single One of them does or if they’re worth enabling So in this video, we’re gonna go over seven of these features that are not enabled by default But still might be useful to you so even if you don’t end up enabling any of these you should at least Definitely know about them because I do have it on good authority that Bill Gates himself goes around to people’s houses Quizzing them on these very specific features And if you
don’t know about them, he will knock you out right in front of all your friends So it’s very important that you know about these now before we get into these a couple points I need to mention first of all the version of Windows that you’re using whether it’s home pro or enterprise will Have an effect on which features actually show up home is gonna have fewer than Pro Pro is purer than Enterprise for example So if you don’t see one of these then that might just mean you don’t have the version that supports and also before you enable Any of these features or really change any major windows settings for that matter always be sure to create a system restore point Just in case you can do that by going to the Start menu searching
system restore and then clicking the create system a store point and then in that menu click create and then just go through that and Then you’ll be safe So let’s get into this the first feature you might want to enable is called windows subsystem for linux And this will basically allow you to install a copy of linux in side windows So it’s not dual booting or anything It’s literally just allowing you to run Linux applications in Windows and add support for that and also use the bash shell to run bash Linux commands within windows so it’s kind of like an alternative to the command line or PowerShell in that case now to get this working properly you basically enable this feature and then restart like you will for all these and then Go to the Microsoft app store and then search for Ubuntu or whatever other distribution you want There’s a few of them on there Install that and then when you go to the Start menu and search bash You’ll be able to run the bash shell and then it’ll ask you to set up like a username and password and then After that, when you run the bash command you’ll now have which you can use instead of the command prompt in some cases So that’s just pretty cool If you wanted to use the Linux command terminal
instead of command prompt or whatever you can now do that and run Linux applications Right inside Windows 10.All right. Now the next feature is called hyper-v, and this is basically Microsoft all which allows the use of certain virtual machines now for this and some other features to work you will have to enable Virtualization in your BIOS and your CPU has to support it. Although most do these days so if you have that option not available, then that’s probably why anyway The hyper-v feature is required for certain types of virtual machines specifically hyper-v virtual machines So it’s the name of the feature and the type of virtual machine, which is from Microsoft Although you should also note that hyper-v needs to be disabled for other types of virtual machines that are a third party such as VirtualBox and VMware Workstation but if you don’t use either of those you probably don’t care about that and hyper-v is nice because it’s literally Included in Windows. You don’t have to install anything extra you just turn the feature on now.
I do want to warn you This is one that definitely create a system restore point before changing because for whatever reason my computer Just kind of sucks and whenever I try to enable hyper-v since one of the most recent major Windows updates my computer goes into a boot loop and It just hates hyper-v for whatever reason so I can’t even use this feature anymore I didn’t really in the past that much but this is one where if you get a boot loop Then you want to have that system restore point to take you back So just be aware that it probably won’t happen, but I don’t know what causes it.I haven’t been able to fix it yet So just be aware of that. All right now the next feature is kind of similar It’s called Windows sandbox And this is a more recent feature added by Microsoft and it basically lets you create a more simplified version of a virtual machine where
you simply run the sandbox and this will open a single instance isolated version of the Windows desktop basically So you can drop files into there and then run it Install it see if it works see if it’s a virus or whatever and then when you close the sandbox the whole thing will be Wiped it can’t access the rest of your system. So it’s good for testing out files that sort of thing This feature will also require virtualization to be enabled in the BIOS. And again, this is another one I guess it uses some type of hyper-v technology where if I try to enable this one my computer won’t boot So again, all these you want to have that system restore point, but before using alright, so moving on though yet another feature That’s kind of similar to the past two is called Windows Defender Application guard and yes, this one also requires virtualization to be enabled in the BIOS This is a feature that allows windows to create isolated again virtualized instances of Certain applications.
So we’re a sandbox. You can run multiple stuff in there This is going to apply to just a certain application specifically now. This is a relatively new feature So, I believe it only applies to Microsoft edge at this point the browser So what would happen is you enable this feature? And then whenever you run edge you’ll have a new option to create a new Virtualized window and what you’ll see specifically is it will say new Application guard window and then that will be able to browse the internet Again, kind of like a sandbox where it doesn’t access the rest of the system This is mostly used in like enterprise situations like in a corporation where maybe there is trusted sites and untrusted sites It’ll force the computer to use this virtualized window on untrusted sites, for example, but even at home This might come in handy if you’re going on sites that you don’t trust because that way it doesn’t allow access to the rest of the system So if there’s like a virus that comes through and it’s trying to do a drive-by attack Theoretically it can’t affect anything on the system all right up next we have a feature that’s under legacy components and then it’s called direct play and direct play is basically an Obsolete game API that used to be used in certain games running on Windows now, it’s not really used anymore However, there are some very old games that may require it and if you try to run it It won’t work now Windows when you install these old games that do require it probably
will prompt you automatically to enable this feature But I’ve seen some posts where people say, it doesn’t work when you try to enable it from the prompt So if you just enable it now then any time you do install an old game like pre 2008 or so Then it should run no problem, or at least that won’t be the problem that running there might other compatibility issues But that’s just one less to worry about so you can probably just enable this feature and then forget about it All right So we got a couple more to talk about the next one is called services for NFS now NFS stands for network file system And it’s basically just a network file sharing Protocol for connecting with remote devices now by default Windows uses a different protocol called SMB which stands for server message block and you’ll use that for things like connecting to an as File server or something when you like mount drive. That’s what it’s using SMB However, NFS is another one that’s usually used more in Linux side of things However, a lot of nas servers support NFS as well and in some cases it might be faster So if you are just using the built in Windows connection, you know You never thought about this other protocol at all, and you are not happy with the performance of your nas well maybe you could enable this and then look up how to use NFS instead or Alternatively perhaps whatever nas you’re running or maybe a server requires NFS to be used like if it is on Linux Then you might have to enable this feature and maybe if you weren’t able to connect to it before you’re like why isn’t it working?
Or if it’s a linux server again NFS probably will work better with that But I don’t know you can try and both see what works.Alright, so finally we’re up to number seven Although I do have a bonus one at the end So this last one is the feature called telnet Client now telnet is basically an ancient network protocol for just sending text-based commands between servers I believe that internet pretty much used to run on that completely now, it’s completely unused for the most part However, you might occasionally come across certain hardware devices like maybe smart home devices that do still use it for example I actually have a little smart home device Called a Lutron hub for my Lutron smart lightbulbs or whatever and that does actually require to be Configured through telnet for whatever reason that’s what they picked so it’s dead simple It’s easy and old and I guess you could say reliable just not very secure to use over the Internet So this is just want to know about if you ever have to use telnet for whatever reason now You know how to enable it.All right now finally, we got a couple bonus ones I just thought these ones look even though they’re probably not gonna be very useful to you Well even less
useful than the ones we talked about for many of you. However, these are called device lockdown There’s multiple under here and two of these that I thought were cool and worth mentioning The first one is called Unbranded boot which basically allows you to hide the windows logo and status and stuff when the computer is booting up this would probably typically be used in like a I don’t know like a mall kiosk or something where there’s like a screen and You don’t want to really show windows booting up or crashing and stuff like that It kind of suppresses those statuses, you know, there’s always a joke where I don’t know like in an airport You see the blue screen of death, it’s hilarious or I guess this would just show like a black screen or something like that So it’s like people don’t kind of laugh at it or whatever And another similar one is called custom login and this basically just lets you remove certain UI elements from the login So you can even like brand it to use your own custom logo if you want to get really advanced stuff like that so those were just a couple that I were wondering what they did when I saw them and now You know if you were wondering so anyway Those are just some features that you might not known about before but now you do so if you guys want to keep watching another video I recommend is a fun one where I Test it out to see what would happen If you delete the windows folder while windows is running that was real fun So you can just click that a little pop-up right here So let me know what you guys think down the comments of course and like the video all that good stuff So thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next one
