On June 29, 2022, the original iPhone turned 15 years old. On this day, a decade and a half ago, Apple began selling its first smartphone in the United States. To celebrate this mark in industry, technology and society, The Wall Street Journal He posted a 20-minute video showing how Apple changed an entire generation with the iPhone.
On June 29, 2007, the first iPhone went on sale. On the same day a boy named Noah Schmeik was born. Over the next fifteen years, the iPhone grew…and so did Noah. Through interviews with current and former Apple CEOs, WSJ’s Joanna Stern tracks how Apple’s invention has matured and changed us all — perhaps the youngest generation ever.
as always, The Wall Street JournalJoanna Stern is more than just talking about the innovative camera, processor, and software features that have been available on the iPhone generation after generation in the past 15 years. The journalist compares the availability of this product to 15-year-old teenager Noah Schmeik, who was born on the same day Apple made the iPhone – which means he has never lived without an iPhone in the world.
While the full video is totally worth watching, Stern provides interesting anecdotes thanks to her interviews with past and current Apple CEOs, including Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of global marketing at Apple Park in Apple Park. “It was awesome. It still gives me goosebumps, because it was from the past,” he says, recalling the original iPhone launch.
Jos comments on the creation of the App Store, the importance of Screen Time, and even the early days when Apple has repeatedly sued Samsung for patent infringements. Here are two of the best quotes from the executive.
“They were annoying,” said Joss, speaking of Samsung and Android in the early days. “And they were annoying because, you know, they stole our technology. They took the innovations we created and made a shoddy version of it and put a bigger screen around it. We weren’t very happy.”
“We created a great tool to help people learn, help people how they work, communicate (…) but at the same time, we want to help people with the fact that there is a need for moderation. We don’t make our money sharing. You use your iPhone, the more money we make. That’s not how it works. We just want you to have a great experience.”
Joanna Stern also meets Philip Shoemaker, who was in charge of the App Store review process, and Justin Santamaria, who helped bring FaceTime to the iPhone.
Although the video is not available on YouTube yet, you can find it here at The Wall Street Journalpage.
What do you expect from the 15th anniversary of the iPhone?
When the iPhone turned a decade old, Apple introduced the new iPhone X with a new design, Face ID unlock, and an OLED display. Now, five years later, the company is expected to introduce four new models of the iPhone 14 series — with a redesign of the Pro model. Apple is said to be improving its processor, cameras and screen technologies like never before – but the product name is not expected to be the XV.
